Our Inner Dimension
Context: 3 Weeks, Rutgers University
Contribution: Book design and printing
Our Inner Dimension takes text from Islamic mysticism, specifically Imam al-Ghazzali's Alchemy of Happiness for readers to learn about themselves and others. According to the mystic tradition, knowing yourself is the way to achieve happiness. The purpose of the book is to create an easy and immersive read for viewers to get to know themselves.
Process
Rakkas is used as display type, while Perpetua bold and regular is used for body text
Opening Spreads
The opening spread uses screen print on a reflective sheet to introduce the topic of the self, not as a who, but as a what. The viewer sees themselves distorted, similar to a fun house mirror.
Chapter Spreads
The chapter spreads use enlarged numbers to emphasize the Rakkas font's sharp angles and exaggerated curves.
Content Spreads
The content spreads take al-Ghazzali's content and simplify it to be digestible and easy to read. Bold text paired with short paragraphs for digestible reading
Black background with white text for breaks and heavy impact
Text digests Alchemy of Happiness into the most important content and elements
Center Spread
The center spread gives the viewer a break, repeating the first question after the viewer has internalized some of the content.
